From “The Sacred Meal”

It’s dangerous, opening your hands. You don’t know what will end up in them. This may have been the smartest thing Jesus ever did. He must have thought, How can I make them step into the unknown? How can I get them to let in some surprise? I know, I’ll figure out a way for them to put their hands in front of them, empty.
If we did nothing else, if nothing was placed in our hands, we would have done two-thirds of what needed to be done. Which is to admit that we simply do not have all the answers; we simply do not have all the power. It is, as the saying goes, “out of our hands.”
