Advent Reflection – 10

Hark! a thrilling voice is sounding,
‘Christ is nigh,’ it seems to say;
‘Cast away the works of darkness,
O ye children of the day.’

– Stanza 1 from Hark! a thrilling voice is sounding from the 6th century Latin hymn

The seasons of Advent and Christmas, which occur during some of the darkest months of the year in the northern hemisphere, fill the seasons with song and life and light and love. The symbolism is rich in the stories of the Bible, which foretell the coming of Christ in the middle of the night, in a most unexpected place…a manger. May we also be surprised at light and love and life that comes from unexpected places in our lives. May the light of Christ shine in each of us, and pierce through the darkness of any sorrow in our own lives.
