Simplicity is a common theme during Lent. The church that I attend makes several liturgical changes during Lent to simplify the church, and to provide a visual reminder of the simplicity of the season. Instead of the brass cross that normally adorns the altar, a simple wooden cross is used. Instead of the flowers that beautify the space, an arrangement of sticks are placed by the altar. Instead of the silver chalice that is normally used for communion, a clay chalice is used instead. These liturgical changes remind us of the call of the season of Lent to simplify our lives, to do a bit of “spring soul cleaning” if you will. May you have a simple Lent!
