Lenten Reflection – Day 20

We are at the midway point of Lent. Today, I find myself wondering how Jesus did it. How did he live the life that he did, being a perfect example for us. He lived his life in perfect humility and love, making the ultimate sacrifice for the world.

It’s amazing and terrifying to think of. Living your life in constant humility and love. The older I get, the more emotionally trying life becomes. Friends are made, friends move away. Family are born, family die. Significant others come into your life, and leave just as fast sometimes. Life is an incredibly difficult journey. In fact, it is too much for some people to bear. Suicide and depression and addictions are rampant in our modern society.

I have found that the only stable thing in my life is my faith. If it weren’t for God’s strength in me through Jesus Christ, my life would look terrifyingly different. I am truly thankful for God’s gifts of compassion and love that constantly weigh on my heart. Anytime I perceive heartache in my life, I turn to God for strength. It is not an easy thing to do….it is the only thing to do.

Merciful and loving God, may your love in me pour out into the world like a spring that burst forth in the desert. May your love quench the dry hearts of those who seek you, and may your glorious life be a beacon to all whose lives are parched from depression and despair. Amen.

On the eighth day of Christmas…

Our lives are filled with countless moments
Filling our lives like fine wine poured out in sacrifice
Surrounding our bodies like a warm blanket around a newborn baby.

They are like gifts, given to us from eternity
Loaned to us for a short while
Only meaningful when taken for a ride.

Fleeting they may be, and limited for a time we cannot know,
We engage each moment, in hope, that the next will come,
Expecting that future moments will give us more opportunities, more time.

Cherish each moment
Like a gift
Like a trip
From which you will soon return.

Be thankful for each moment
Experienced in awe and gratitude
Shared with love
And enjoyed with companions.

For it is not our choosing
When that one moment will be our last
So, make haste to love, and be swift to live
Seek the One who gives you each moment, in this life and the next.

Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy

Today, on May 21, 2011, I post this in honor of the Lord’s sovereignty and omnipotence. Though the Lord is almighty and all powerful, our Lord is a Lord of hopefulness, joy, eagerness, faith, kindliness, grace, gentleness, and calm. Our Lord does not require us to try and know all. It is not the role of man to attempt to interpret every truth of the Lord, or to try and foretell when and how the end of the world will occur. No. Our Lord is a Lord whose grace, above all, saves us from the need for us to seek perfection in order to be one with God.

Thanks be to God…for grace, for mercy, for love, for compassion, and above all, for the truth made known to us in Jesus Christ. Let us not seek to know when the end will be; let us instead seek to embody that truth that is made known to us in Jesus Christ. Amen.

Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy,
whose trust, ever childlike, no cares could destroy,
be there at our waking, and give us we pray,
your bliss in our hearts, Lord, at the break of the day.

Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith,
whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe,
be there at our labors, and give us, we pray,
your strength in our hearts, Lord, at the noon of the day.

Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace,
your hands swift to welcome, your arms to embrace,
be there at our homing, and give us, we pray,
your love in our hearts, Lord, at the eve of the day.

Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm,
whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm,
be there at our sleeping, and give us, we pray,
your peace in our hearts, Lord, at the end of the day.

Lord of all hopefulness, sung by the York Minster Choir, York, England.

A Prayer for Japan

Most merciful God, upon whose endless love all living beings rely,
Hear the cries of your people in Japan. Feel their sorrow,
And empower those who seek to help to pour out assistance
In sweeping multitudes.

Holy God, your love knows no end.
May your grace and strength fill the hearts and minds
Of those victims who still wait for rescue.
May your peace and gratitude fill the souls
Of those who mourn the loss of their loved ones.
May your wisdom and stamina strengthen the hands
Of those people who flurry to find survivors.

Sacred Spirit, from whom all life flows,
Pour out your blessings on the devastated communities of Japan.
Empower your people to flock to their aid,
Strengthen those who assist with unfathomable diligence,
And multiply the relief effort in innumerable waves.

Hear your people, Holy Lord, and comfort our cries.
Hear your people, Sacred Son, and fulfill our every need.
Hear your people, Blessed Spirit, and heal the endless pain.

AMEN

Unnamed, by me

Lord God, you have given us an abundance of blessings through your Son Jesus Christ, and through the power of the Holy Spirit. We pray that, by the power of your Spirit, we may faithfully serve you and work to bring about your will in our lives and in our communities. We ask these things through Christ, our Lord. Amen.
