Colossians 1:11-14

May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from God’s glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. God has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

By mighty powers carefully protected

In memory of my dear friend, Maria Friederika Dunnagan (1921-2014).

By mighty powers carefully protected
we calmly wait and trust: let come what may.
God is with us, to him we are connected
mornings and nights and surely each new day.

The past still comes to torture our poor heart
the weight of evil days will not depart.
O Lord, please show our frightened souls the place
where we may learn of your redeeming grace.

By friendly powers silently surrounded
consoled and cared for in a wondrous way.
So will I live with you, when days are counted
into a New Year walk with you, I pray.

When now deep silence comes and does surround us
so let us hear the concert clear and strong.
From your great world, unseen, yet still around us
with all your children praising you in song.

–Words: translated by Maria Friederika Dunnagan, after Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945)
–Music: INTERCESSOR (by Charles Hubert Hastings Parry, 1848-1918)

O Zion, haste, thy mission high fulfilling

O Zion, haste, thy mission high fulfilling,
to tell to all the world that God is Light;
that he who made all nations is not willing
one soul should fail to know his love and might.

Refrain:
Publish glad tidings: tidings of peace
tidings of Jesus, redemption and release.

Proclaim to every people, tongue, and nation
that God, in whom they live and move, is Love;
tell how he stooped to save his lost creation,
and died on earth that all might live above. Refrain

Send heralds forth, to bear the message glorious;
give of thy wealth to speed them on their way;
pour out thy soul for them in prayer victorious
till God shall bring his kingdom’s joyful day. Refrain

He comes again! O Zion, ere thou meet him,
make known to every heart his saving grace;
let none whom he hath ransomed fail to greet him,
through thy neglect, unfit to see his face. Refrain

Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer

This is another one of my favorite hymns, sung to one of my favorite hymn tunes: Cwm Rhondda, a Welsh tune written in 1907. This hymn is also sometimes written as “Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah.”

Guide me, o thou great Redeemer,
Pilgrim through this Barren Land,
I am weak, but thou art mighty,
Hold me with thy pow’rful Hand;
Bread of Heaven, Bread of Heaven,
Feed me till I want no more.

Open now the Crystal Fountain
Whence the healing Stream doth flow,
Let the fi’ry cloudy Pillar
Lead me all my Journey through;
Strong Deliv’rer, Strong Deliv’rer,
Be thou still my Strength and Shield.
Be thou still my Strength and Shield.

When I tread the Verge of Jordan,
Bid my anxious Fear subside;
Death of Deaths, and Hell’s Destruction,
Land me safe on Canaan’s Side.
Songs of Praises, Songs of Praises,
I will ever give to Thee.
I will ever give to Thee.

–Words by William Williams (1717-1791), originally written in Welsh as “Arglwydd, arwain trwy’r anialwch”, translated into English by Peter Williams in 1771.
–Tune: Cwm Rhondda by John Hughes (1907)

–This version of the hymn is from the Royal Wedding: Official Album of the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton at Westminster Abbey on April 29, 2011. Accompaniment by The Choir of Her Majesty’s Chapel Royal, St. James’s Palace; Organist: Robert Quinney; Conductor: James O’Donnell.
